Oli Kellett: Weightless Moments

Oli Kellett’s new series “Fountains,” exhibited at HackelBury gallery in London, uses water droplets as inspiration to create surrealist photographs, drawing on historical painters and art movements.

After traveling the world for “Cross Road Blues”, a series of wide-frame shots capturing pedestrians at crossroads, their figures small against vast urban backdrops, the artist turns his lens closer to home. He focuses on the fountains of Trafalgar Square in London, using a telephoto lens to capture fleeting street moments.

“I watched the tiny droplets of water, almost completely weightless and at the mercy of the slightest breeze, magical as they disperse through the crowds,” he writes. The suspended droplets recall Georges Seurat’s pointillism, while the tones and mood of other images echo other masters like Courbet, Auerbach, Monet, Van Gogh.

The exhibition “Fountains” is on view at HackelBury gallery in London, UK, until May 17.
