Campbell Addy: a New Photographic Voice Between Fashion and Culture

The London-based artist and photographer of Ghanaian origin presents his first institutional exhibition in the United States at SCAD FASH in Atlanta, featuring more than 50 fashion and portrait images.

He is one of the prodigies of the new photography scene. Since the beginning of his career, this thirty-something British-Ghanaian, born in New Addington, South London, has drawn on his multicultural upbringing and a strong social conscience, developing a vision that is both singular and personal. In less than 10 years, Campbell Addy has made a name for himself and become one of the most promising fashion and culture photographers of his generation.

“The Stillness of Elegance,” his first-ever institutional exhibition in the United States, at the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta, contributes to this reach. “Inviting the public to a kind of retrospective—to explore my career and confront the images that have shaped me, represent my inner world, and continue to inspire my practice—arouses a whirlwind of emotions in me,” he explains.

Transcending the gaze

Some 50 images are displayed on the walls of the museum space, divided into four sections, exploring the themes of intimacy, connection, imagination and celebrity. “The Stillness of Elegance” skillfully breaks down his meteoric trajectory, from his beginnings to his editorials, including his photoshoots, his celebrity portraits, his drawings, his paintings and his poems, such as 19, a pivotal moment in his life.

For the scenography, curator Ben Toffelson, curator of the SCAD Museum of Art, chose to dimly light the spaces, whose walls are covered in an intense purple, and to focus the lighting on the works. This play of light and shadow creates a dreamlike, warm, and cozy atmosphere, subtly highlighting Campbell Addy’s interiority and artistic evolution.

The first work is the essence: an ebony-skinned model stands sovereign, a haughty and warrior-like pose, in front of a waterfall in Ghana, wearing a flowing magenta dress. As he himself puts it, “every part of my identity is reflected in my art”. A work that is already very assertive. His images, between commissions and personal projects, intelligently and resiliently probe his feelings of doubt, fear and uncertainty, displaying his pronounced taste for sartorial style.

The exhibition chronicles the journey of his discoveries that shape his chromatic, moving, and dynamic universe. It’s no surprise that Naomi Campbell, Nadine Ijewere, and Beyoncé immediately endorsed him. Meghan Markle, Zoë Kravitz, Kendall Jenner, Lewis Hamilton, Lizzo, Debra Shaw, and even The Creator have all posed for his camera. His client portfolio is just as extensive, with clients like YSL Beauty, Nike, and Cartier.

Sensitive and creative fighter

His imagery is truly charged with energy, compassion, and authenticity, as it emanates from his interest in the Other and visual storytelling, constantly drawing on his roots and experience as a Black queer photographer. Growing up in a religious family, a follower of Jehovah’s Witnesses, he quickly chose to reject idolatry at the age of sixteen, when he left the cocoon, and to reclaim the world of art, fashion, and culture as the beauty of the world.

It was in high school that he discovered photography through masters such as Irving Penn, Nick Knight and James Barnor. In 2016, after graduating from Central Saint Martins, he founded his Nii project, split into two poles, giving a taste of his vision, his psyche and his origins. On one side, Nii Agency, a modeling agency dedicated to the importance of diversity in front of and behind the lens. On the other, Nii Journal, a biannual arts and culture publication, focusing on underrepresented racial, sexual, religious and cultural identities.

Through this collection, Addy expands the scope of possibilities on his favorite themes, which many of his peers still tackle today. Most of the works at SCAD FASH are portraits published in magazines, such as Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Dazed, Financial Times, British Vogue, but also in his own magazine

Timeless elegance

Since then, his work has garnered accolades and acclaim. In 2022, he released his first monograph, Feeling Seen, with a foreword by former Vogue UK editor Edward Enningful, which explores the intersection of photography, race, beauty, and representation. The following year, he presented his first solo exhibition, “I ❤Campbell,” in collaboration with 180 Studios, which featured photography, paintings, and a short film shot in Ghana.

In 2024, he participated in the National Geographic documentary series Photographer. Like the other visual storytellers featured, the episode featuring him traces his childhood and early career to his current projects. “I want to present my upbringing,” he confided in an excerpt surrounding his first solo show. “To talk about the things that happened to me, to translate them into visual language. I want my work to go beyond the photo frame. I draw on my own iconography: I’m queer, I’m Black, I’m religious, I’m from England. All the things I’ve often had to run away from, I bring them together here. I’ve never been so vulnerable, both personally and professionally. And that scares me because it’s not strategic, cool, or trendy.”

Through these achievements, “The Stillness of Elegance” continues in this vein and reaffirms that Addy doesn’t capture simple images; they all tell a story. He authentically and sensitively rethinks the conventions of the medium in fashion, offering a fresh perspective on beauty and style. The exhibition is also punctuated with animated images and video footage from his photoshoots, further expanding the exploration of his creative process.

This 32-year-old multidisciplinary artist thus shows the beginnings of a great future. His works are captivating. Not only because they are beautiful to look at, but also because he lets himself be guided by his dreams and ambitions. He has learned and unlearned from his upbringing between two continents. Above all, he has been able to define his freedom, his space, and his time, re-examining the very notion of “elegance” through difference, tranquil and serene.
