Cristina de Middel: Reimagining Migration
Cristina de Middel’s book Journey to the Center explores the perilous migration route to the United states and through Mexico, drawing symbolic inspiration from Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth.
The journey starts in Tapachula, at the Mexico-Guatemala border, and it ends in a small California town called Felicity, which is the “official Center of the World”. Cristina de Middel’s images, imbued with symbolism, represent a decisive change of direction from the visual stereotypes associated with migration.
The photographer spent time with migrants on the infamous train called “the Beast”, collecting stories also from smugglers and police. She weaves her images and commentary with three main testimonies of migrants recounting their hardships, highlighting the human cost of border policies.
The book “Journey to the Center “ is published by Editorial RM and available at the price of 55 Euro.
