Memory Rests in the Landscape
Raymond Thompson Jr.’s book «It’s hard to stop rebels that time travel», seeks to expand narratives of the Black experience by confronting the erasure of history, and connecting it to the American landscape.
The book features newspaper clippings from the 19th century that document the lynchings of African Americans, and advertisements placed by enslavers seeking the return of those who had escaped. These chilling records are presented alongside Thompson’s own portraits and photos of the American countryside and suburbs, creating a dialogue between historical violence and his contemporary act of remembrance.
"More and more, Black people like myself are seeking answers to questions surrounding their origin," Thompson writes. "This journey through our families' pasts necessitates us to walk the paths of our ancestors. This project became my portal to slip between the past, present and future."
The book “It’s hard to stop rebels that time travel” is published by VOID and available on preorder at the price of 40 Euro.
