In “Woke Up Laughing”, Belgian artist Bruno V. Roels explores the possibilities of the analog photographic process. His images navigate between aesthetics and experimentation, escapism and historical awareness.
The artist combines analog techniques with other non-photographic art forms and processes, such as artificial intelligence and generative imagery. In addition, he plays with the reproducible nature of the medium, creating unique works that often consist of multiple variations of the same negative, compiling them as equivalent images in the same frame, so that no image is perfect or superior to another. Artistic imperfections and incidental elements, such as folds and smudges that occur during printing, remain visible and characterize his visual language.
