Hand-Woven Histories

Bruce Silverstein Gallery presents “I Want to Hold You Longer, a solo exhibition by Sarah Sense, Native American artist renowned for her sculptural photographs that intertwine traditional weaving with contemporary landscapes.

Through her work, the artist revisits the cultural significance of Choctaw and Chitimacha basket-making, weaving archival maps and imagery of ancestral landscapes and creating a dialogue between Indigenous heritage and colonial pasts.

“I saw the joy of weaving in the patterning but also felt the desperation of weaving” says Sarah Sense. “The hands that wove the basket seem to be touching mine [...] I hold it longer and feel the words, ‘I want to hold you longer. ’”
