Hicham Benohoud: School Is a Lab

Moroccan art teacher Hicham Benohoud’s book “ The Classroom” is a playful, collaborative reaction to his country’s rigid education system.

Frustrated by conventional teaching methods in the 1990s, Hicham Benohoud transformed his classroom into a lab for artistic rebellion, guiding students to explore creativity and post-colonial identity through staged images.

The book’s sequence revisits the art teacher’s archive, presenting the first in-depth study of his pioneering work. Through a striking contrast of order and absurdity, the photographs challenge conventional notions of schooling, exposing a surreal tension between discipline and self-expression.

The book “The Classroom” is published by Loose Joints and available at the price of 42 Euro.
