Jeff Wall: Constructed Realities
The exhibition “Jeff Wall. Photographs” at Gallerie d’Italia in Turin celebrates 40 years of the artist’s work, whose cinematic scenes find inspiration in the everyday to take on a dreamlike, uncanny quality.
Photographs by Jeff Wall
The 27 photographs on view, including his celebrated lightboxes, confront major social and political questions, exploring how nature, war, gender, race, and class shape our lives. Often enigmatic, Jeff Wall’s images draw on references to art history, literature, and cinema, from Hokusai and Manet to Italian Neorealism.
Rather than capturing spontaneous moments, the artist spends long periods constructing intricate photographic tableaux, using digital techniques and film-like lighting to create each image. Curated by David Campany, writer, art critic, and Creative Director of the International Center of Photography in New York, the exhibition highlights the meticulous craft behind Jeff Wall’s work and his influence on contemporary photography.
