Khashayar Javanmardi’s Look at the Caspian Sea’s Decline
In his book “Caspian”, Iranian lens-based artist Khashayar Javanmardi exposes the environmental decline of the Caspian sea, turning his lens on the communities living on the shores of the world’s biggest lake.
122,000 tons of waste are poured into the waters of the Caspian sea every year. Once a thriving ecosystem bounded by Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, the lake now suffers from pollution, and the consequences of climate change.
The book reveals how industrial waste and collapsing fish stocks have devastated the communities livelihoods, with fishing rates plummeting by 70%. A native of the lake’s Iranian shore, Khashayar Javanmardi set out to expose the region’s shrinking resources, with the heart filled with nostalgic memories.
