Living the Myth

The first monograph by photographer Jim Krantz, “Frontier” explores the enduring myth of the American West through the figure of the cowboy—an icon deeply rooted in the national imagination. In this world, as the author describes it, “survival becomes art and freedom is a way of life.”

Jim Krantz’s imagery, familiar from decades of anonymous reproduction on advertising billboards for brands like Marlboro and Wrangler, was frequently appropriated by artist Richard Prince. “Frontier” moves beyond this pop culture legacy to reveal, for the first time, his personal vision, shaped over more than 40 years of work.
