Mario Giacomelli’s Vision
At Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, a retrospective of Mario Giacomelli commemorates the centenary of his birth, tracing the distinctive elements that define one of Italy’s most visionary photographers.
The exhibition presents over 300 original prints, many of whom were never shown before, highlighting Giacomelli’s experimental dialogue with abstraction and realism. A typographer by training, he expressed his creative freedom not just behind the camera but also in the darkroom, where he famously played with contrast, distortion, and perspective.
His most renowned series, depicting seminarians playing in the snow as if floating on a milky white expanse, propelled him to international fame. Throughout the exhibition, his photographs enter into dialogue with artwork by Afro, Alberto Burri, Enzo Cucchi, Jannis Kounellis, and photographer Roger Ballen, who shared his profound, ironic, and tragic sensitivity to the human condition.
The exhibition “Mario Giacomelli. Il fotografo e l’artista” is on view at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, Italy, until August 3rd.
