Of Tenderness and Grief

In photographer Lydia Goldblatt’s book “Fugue”, images and text detail her journey in becoming a mother, and losing her own mother.

Focused on the domestic space, made over the course of four years, the images capture unspecific moments, and their atmosphere is suspended, open to interpretation. The photographer’s text, by contrast, is filled with meticulously described scenes and reflections, offering a direct insight in her psychology.

“I wanted to be honest about what I was struggling with, about the feelings of claustrophobia and rage, as much as intimacy and love. These are feelings so often hidden by mothers, so often silenced as unacceptable.”

The book “Fugue” is published by GOST and available at the price of 55 Euro.
