Sergio Larraín: A State of Flux

The exhibition Wanderings at the International Center of Photography in New York celebrates Chilean photographer Sergio Larraín through his most defining series. His photography merges a distinctive human sensitivity with a strong architectural awareness that frames social realities across different classes.

Organized chronologically and guided by Larraín’s own writings, “Wanderings” explores the material and spiritual drama of urban and rural life, while tracing the evolution of his vision. The artist’s travels across Europe for Magnum Photos and his return to Chile culminated in “Valparaíso”, a poetic portrait of the city and its wandering children.

According to Agnès Sire, curator of the exhibition and Director of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, “The terms Sergio Larraín used to describe the ‘state of grace’ necessary for ‘receiving’ a good image are mystical, as if the images were already present in the cosmos and the photographer acted as a medium.”
