Steve Madden: Winter Rush Hour
A book by photographer and radio presenter Steve Madden, “The Grind” captures fragments of the 5 million bus journeys made in London every day.
Steve Madden is best known for his 40-year career at the BBC as a host, writer, producer, and voice-over artist. After work, he would head to Central London, especially on rainy or freezing nights over the course of three winters, to capture commuters during the evening rush. His anonymous subjects turn into colorful, abstract patches of color under harsh lighting, captured alone on a crowded journey.
“All the best pictures were the ones that got away, of course – it’s one of the world’s busiest cities, and it’s full of obstructions, many of them human.(...) Misty windows aren’t what they were– buses are increasingly air-conditioned, and since Covid, passenger numbers are down. So what I did there is already becoming history. Change is what happens when you’re looking the other way....”
The book “The Grind” is published by GOST and available at the price of 50 Euro.
