Taysir Batniji: Video Call to Gaza

The book “Disruptions” gathers screenshots from Whatsapp calls between Palestinian photographer Taysir Batniji and his mother in Gaza, where the fragmented digital space is destabilized by the same forces affecting people’s lives on the ground.

As Taysir Batniji settled in Europe and found himself unable to return home for years, video calls became his primary connection to family. The poor connection, which distorts and disrupts the frames, serves as a visual metaphor for the conflict, control, and surveillance that Palestinians have endured for decades.

The screenshots featured in the book were captured between 2015 and 2017. Amid a new phase of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has caused the death of at least 50,000 Palestinians and 1,600 Israelis since October 7, 2023, 100% of the book’s proceeds will be donated to the NGO Medical Aid for Palestinians, supporting medical care and relief efforts on the ground.

The book “Disruptions” is published by Loose Joints and available at the price of 40 Euro.
