“It was sort of spontaneous, on a basketball court near the Goudes,” says Sakina Douiou. “I asked two friends from school to come and pose under the beautiful light of a sunset.” With the sole desire to play around with the looks and attitudes of the two boys, she let herself be guided by the beauty of the moment. Everything about the setting was conducive to making stunning images: the typical Mediterranean rocky terrain, the wasteland aspect of the asphalt, the basketball court as a space for bodies to express themselves.
An atmosphere reinforced by the discrepancy between the abandoned vibe of the setting and the boys’ carefully cultivated look: a black turtleneck for one, a denim shirt for the other, with far away eyes and a kind of haughty bearing. These two youths gaze at the photographer with eyes full of defiance and a touch of insolence, yet with the touching candor of adolescence.
It is indeed this intermediate age that the photographer manages to explore, an age that is both transitory and decisive in the construction of self. “You’re grappling with difficult questions at 17, questions of identity. You don’t shape who you are alone. Each person does it on their own, but together, ”says Sakina Douiou.
