More than 90 photographers – including Gary Knight, Adam Ferguson or Ed Kashi – are coming together to support people fighting for democracy in Myanmar. Print For Crisis is a month-long photography fundraiser to raise money for freedom of expression since the military coup of February 1st, 2021 put an abrupt end to Myanmar’s burgeoning democracy. It’s an initiative led by photographers Chiara Luxardo and Olga Stefatou after feeling compelled to take action given their deep connection to Myanmar. “Living in a world that is traumatized by fear and uncertainty, we strongly believe that helping each other is more essential than ever,” they said.
Print For Crisis aims to raise awareness for Myanmar, collect funds through a print sale of limited edition archival prints and send a message of encouragement to the people. The majority of the country is refusing to work under the dictatorship and has formed a Civil Disobedience Movement, now nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. However, this has left many with little economic resources, while recent weeks have seen a harsh crackdown on the media, artists and the Internet. Newsrooms have been raided, journalists and artists arrested and wounded. Against all odds and at great personal risk, journalists and artists continue to report and share what is happening in Myanmar.
“As photographers from Myanmar, or who have lived and worked in Myanmar, we are passionate about helping this country that we love and where people are showing extraordinary bravery and creativity, challenging a repression that has killed more than 700 people so far,” said Chiara Luxardo.
The print sale is running until May 12, 2021 and offers archival c-type prints with image size 20 x 30 cm (or its close format equivalent) each in a limited edition of ten, numbered, unsigned and labeled on verso. Prints are priced at £90 and available to be shipped worldwide. “We want each image to travel around the world and remind us of the beauty, connection, and independence of the people of Myanmar, while giving our colleagues concrete help by allowing media and artists to survive and journalists to work for their people and for a just future” said Olga Stefatou.
All net proceeds will go to local organisations and initiatives supporting freedom of expression and independent media, particularly targeted by the military regime.
