American Streets
The exhibition “Vivian Maier-Sabine Weiss: Made in USA” at Les Douches la Galerie draws a parallel between two groundbreaking women photographers of the 20th century.
The two photographers were born two years apart in the 1920s, Sabine Weiss a Swiss-born French citizen and Vivian Maier an American, whose mother was French. With two radically different professional histories and personalities, they roamed the streets with a genuine curiosity of everyday life, and American cities became the theater of their explorations.

The photographs indicate a sharp attention to physiognomies, attitudes and outfits, and the similarity between some of the images triggers a reflection on the difference between the gaze of a professional photographer like Weiss and the one of Vivian Maier, who worked as a nanny for most of her life.
