Blind Magazine : photography at first sight

Archive of Time

For the book “A Photographer’s Life”, photographer Henry Leutwyler has created a visual archive of personal objects that belonged to Philippe Halsman.

One of the best known portrait photographers of all times, Philippe Halsman had a total of 101 Life covers to his name, more than any other photographer. Fascinated with his work since when he was a teenager in 1979, Henry Leutwyler collaborated with the Halsman Archive to photograph hundreds of objects belonging to the legendary artist.

Folders filled with contact sheets of Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn’s portraits, letter exchanges with Richard Avedon, Nixon and Janet Leigh, Halsman’s cameras, filters and briefcases reveal the photographer’s oeuvre and personality, together with an important piece of recent history.

The book A Photographer’s Life is published by  Steidl and available at the price of 75 Euro.
