Asphalt and Sweat
For 7 years Capucine Bailly photographed a basketball court in lower Manhattan, which now turned into a book: “The Cage”.
Close to West 4th Street in the Greenwich village neighborhood of New York City, people and a vast array of vehicles keep on with their fast-paced flow just outside of the fence. Inside, a world on its own unfolds. Fascinated with sports, Capucine Bailly was invited in: “If you’re not scared”, Devon said. Followed by Clef, St Clair, Marcus, Joel, he became one of her protagonists, on the electric stage of “The Cage”.
“Their body language fascinates me, I try and capture the small details, the ones invisible to the naked eye, their elegant movements. But also what goes on beyond and around the game, where people are chatting, laughing, sharing. There is no age limit, everyone is welcome. From 2003 to 2010, The Cage is my subject, my refuge: 310 films, 11,160 snaps, and now a book, nearly 20 years later.”
