Bending Memories

In her book “Plexus”, photographer Helena Helfrecht confronts her family’s past spanning four generations, creating an eerie world that bridges memory and imagination.

After the death of her grandmother, the photographer traveled to her family’s estate in Bavaria, determined to unpack a complicated history of generational trauma. In her surreal images, spaces, objects and animals become symbolic elements in the materialization of her direct and inherited memories, echoing war, mental health and mystery.

“Immersing myself into this story, I fill the gaps with dreams, associations and imagined scenes to create a narrative transgressing personal and national boundaries. The objects and architecture of the house become parabolic proxies and open a gate between the past and the present.”

The book “Plexus” is published by VOID and available at the price of 45 Euro.
