Congo Waking Dream

Belgian-Congolese photographer Leonard Pongo’s new book “The Uncanny” is an eerie journey through his encounters and experiences in Democratic Republic of Congo.

In 2011, Leonard Pongo traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo to photograph the country’s general election and its impact on society. Soon coming to terms with the limits of photographic documentation in analysing the environment, biases and stereotypes, he turned his work into a visceral account of his own experiences.

Day and night blend, and light breaks through the photographs in unpredictable ways. They become fragments of waking dreams taking place in domestic interiors, streets, dance halls and churches. Disoriented, whe viewer can only give up on any rational understanding, to focus on the energy.

The book The Uncanny is published by GOST and available at the price of 55 Euro.
