The Prix Élysée 2023 Awarded to Debi Cornwall

The American photographer's ongoing series, "Model Citizens", was selected from among eight other projects by the jury.

After a career in civil law, Debi Cornwall turned to the photographic medium. Her images are also tools for political analysis and are politically and intellectually engaged. The ongoing series echoes current events while highlighting the need to question photography as evidence.

The "Model Citizens" series questions the function of photography. Her stagings show the performance of citizenship in the United States, a militarized country where the truth rubs shoulders with fake news. Debi Cornwall explores the boundary between reality and fiction, a boundary that is becoming increasingly blurred, especially with the arrival of AIs.

Awarded every two years following an international call for entries, the Prix Élysée provides financial support to enable an artist to complete his or her research and publish a book. The aim is to encourage the creativity of young photographers and to support the creation of new works.

"Model Citizens"

will be presented at Photo Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland, from June 30 to October 1, 2023.
