Kevin Bubriski: The Aftermath

On April 25, 2015, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8Mw shook Nepal, northwest of its capital Kathmandu. Photographer Kevin Bubriski documented the aftermath of the natural disaster, and people’s efforts to rebuild their country.

The earthquake killed 8,964 people and injured 21,952 more. Hundreds of thousands of Nepalese were made homeless, and aftershocks continued until the next day. The book “Nepal Earthquake” documents the disappearance of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Nepalese citizens’ strength in the struggle to save the injured and mourn the dead, among buildings reduced to rubble.

The photographer gathered essays from several local writers, and kept a personal journal throughout the emergency. The written testimonies included in the book alternate between pessimism and hope, in a society where the efforts for recovery uncovered structural inequalities. The images, once published as breaking news, are now a piece of the country’s history.

The book “Nepal Earthquake” by Kevin Bubriski is available at the price of 35$.
