Light Shapes

The book “Day for Night”, a collaboration between the Japanese photographer Toshio Shibata and the publisher Deadbeat Club, reveals 70 photographs made between 1980 and 1988 so far unpublished.

In the book’s sequence, night landscapes gradually progress into daylight scenes. The absolute stillness and the power of volumes in Toshio Shibata’s images blend with a game of natural and artificial light, positive and negative space.

“The title gives another layer to the book,” says the photographer about the spectator’s confusion between night and day. “I knew that technique since my childhood through watching ‘Rawhide’ on TV but until now I’d never seen my own work with such an eye.”

The book “Day for Night” is published by Deadbeat Club and available at the price of $47.
