Myth Making and Real People

Bristol-born photographer Chris Hoare reflects on his home city, and the aspects of its present and past that are least known to the public

The photographer prefers to shoot “away from the harbourside, Clifton Suspension Bridge and the historic old town”, in overlooked neighborhoods whose edges he got to know growing up. The book’s title is drawn from the claim that Bristol, along with other cities, was built on seven hills, like ancient Rome.

History flows into the book like a ghost, with the reminiscence of its role in the African slave trade and the toppling of Edward Colston’s statue by Black Live Matter protesters, calling into question the way we decide to remember.

The book “Seven Hills” is published by RRB Books and available at the price of £45.
