36 Views of Mount Fuji
Japanese artist Takashi Homma has taken a closer look at the iconic Mount Fuji, offering a selection of 36 prints in a book soberly entitled Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, published by independent publisher MACK.
Like a tribute to the work of the same name, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, by the painter and draughtsman Hokusai, known for his ukiyo-e of Mount Fuji made between 1831 and 1833, Takashi Homma offers, in his turn, thirty-six views of Mount Fuji, in Japan. Using the tools of his time as brushes, he turns his attention to this natural monument of his country.

The artist evokes Japan’s traditions of representation and illustration while offering a haunting new encounter with his subject. Using pinhole cameras and digital technology, Takashi Homma creates ghostly images of Mount Fuji, in the south-west of Tokyo. The collaged views place him ambiguously in the landscape. With this new book, he is writing a subtle and essential new chapter in the history of Japanese visual culture.
