Through the Desert
The book “Born of Sand and Sun” is the result of three years of work by photographer Petra Bašnáková with Palestinian Bedouin tribes.
In 1948 many Palestinians, including the desert tribes of the Bedouin, were forced to leave their homes. If the displacement couldn’t succeed in breaking their bond with the desert, the number of Bedouins inhabiting their original territories has been shrinking considerably, to the point that their identity and way of life risk disappearing. Shot in the West-Bank, Judean Desert and the Dead Sea, imbued with a distinct desert light, the sequence finds a delicate balance between portraits, landscapes, and quiet details of daily life scenes.

The text of the book details the photographer’s path, as a foreigner, in learning from the Bedouins’ non-materialistic lifestyle and relationship with space and time. Writing about the encounter with a boy who invited her to follow him and his flock, she recalls: “We embarked on a journey of trust between two strangers from different worlds, which led us to the most precious thing – family.”
