The Heart Of Brooklyn

Amy Touchette’s book Personal Ties gathers portraits of Bed-Stuy natives, in Brooklyn, New York City.

The moment regular people are asked to pose for a photograph is as rare as it is special. Amy Touchette spent the last 7 years photographing strangers who were born in the neighbourhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy for residents) in Brooklyn, New York City. Jay-Z was born there, Spike Lee chose it to shoot his film Do the Right Thing.

As this neighbourhood symbolic of black culture is changing fast, the photographer prefers to share moments with the ones who called it home for a lifetime. "Photographing strangers on the street is like having an epic novel read aloud to you, only it's real. You're connected. You're involved. And you carry every piece of it with you from then on." she writes.
