Heartbeat of the Land
Terra Fondriest’s “Ozark Life Project” is a 10-year-long personal journey into rural life in Arkansas.
“Growing up in the Ozarks of Arkansas is a feeling hard to put into words, a connection to the rhythm of the hills, to family. It’s ties to the land that can be felt more as a heartbeat that the ground has instilled in you rather than just a place where you grew up”, writes Terra Fondriest.
Her images speak about generational ties, the “decadence of the everyday”, a visceral connection to nature and the need to help each other, in a small community where it would be hard to live otherwise. A mother of two, she photographs dirty feet, tarantulas climbing over heads, and a cycle of life and death that interests human beings and animals alike, in a way that cities lead us to forget.
