Looking at Gender and the Self
Artists Marvel Harris, Siddhartha Hajra and Soumya Sankar used photography to tell intimate stories about gender identity.
Siddhartha Hajra’s photographs of transgender performance artists are the fruit of a collaboration that lasted for years. He poses the question: “What parts of ourselves might remain shrouded to us and yet visible to those closest to us?”. Soumya Sankar Bose worked with friends of the LGBTQ community in India, creating dreamy photographs that feel like scenes from an enigmatic film.

Marvel Harris focuses on the struggle with mental health and gender transition during his coming of age. Collaboration and self-reflection are the common denominators in an exhibition whose work is created by artists who would normally be on the other side of the lens, now are taking the narrative in their own hands. A quote by poet Ocean Vuong accompanies the show: "I still have my body and with it these words, hammered into a structure just wide enough to hold the weight of my living.”
