Red Cross: A Story in Objects
The book “Humanity” by photographer Henry Leutwyler is a testament to the Red Cross’ historical role in delivering medical and community support, particularly for poor and underprivileged citizens around the world.
Created in close collaboration with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva, the book is an archive of first-aid kits, uniforms, armbands, and prosthetic limbs as well as unexpected treasures, like beaded flowers made by prisoners of war.
Sifting through the nearly 30,000 objects in the museum, the photographer created portraits of a selection of them in his distinctive style, focusing on details, imperfections and the passing of time. A way to celebrate the work of the nurses, doctors and employees who used them to perform an essential humanitarian task.
