The Sea in our Blood

In his book “The Bay”, photographer Benjamin Hoffman focuses on the visceral relationship between mankind and the sea, in the oldest South African fishing port.

A fishing port, Kalk Bay used to be the only place where, during the South African Apartheid, people of different ethnicities could work and live together. It is here that Benjamin Hoffman, a photographer driven by topics of cultural migration and disappearance, chooses to explore the life and routine of fishermen, and their relationship to an unforgiving nature.

Imbued with a calm sense of transcendence, the images speak about community and lone moments, following life’s pace in the small village as fishermen try to keep alive a profession that, threatened by climate change, pollution and industrial interests, promises to disappear.

The book “The Bay” by Benjamin Hoffman is published by Editions de Juillet, and available at the price of 35 Euro.
