One day, Gaétan Vernier’s girlfriend told him that she had won a cruise for two in a contest. That’s settled: he would accompany her on the Norwegian tour and, as a photography enthusiast, with a love for strong compositions and unfiltered light, he will use this opportunity to produce some new photos.
Aboard the cruise liner, they encountered some curious demographics: practically all of the 500 plus passengers were over 60. Most of them thought that this young couple were on their honeymoon. “It was a rather funny situation,” said Vernier, who explained he wanted to portray the passengers in a way that was both funny and tender. He took most of the pictures secretly, surreptitiously, like an old-fashioned street photographer.
“What was interesting on this trip was the fact that we experienced four seasons within the span of a week, passing from 20ºC [68ºF] to –10ºC [14ºF]!” recalled the photographer. And the liner docked in some 34 ports! This grand journey also allowed Vernier to capture some beautiful landscapes, local cultures, such as children wearing traditional costumes for a ceremony. He saw Norway in all its splendor.
