Catherine Deneuve, Icon of an Era

Galerie de l'Instant pays tribute to Catherine Deneuve, actress, woman and muse, with two exhibitions in two key locations in Paris.

In the 1960s, Catherine Dorléac became Catherine Deneuve, her mother's real pseudonym. She had never wanted to become an actress, but took on a series of small roles alongside her sister Françoise. That was until a decisive encounter with Jacques Demy. In Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, he gave the twenty-year-old actress her first major role. The shoot was a turning point for Deneuve, who in less than two years went from success to success: Delphine in Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, Carole in Répulsion, or the mysterious Tristana in Belle de Jour.

With her unique gaze, elegantly styled blond hair and elusive smile, Catherine Deneuve is the icon of an era. Far from being a frozen beauty, the actress' fierce freedom is caught in the lenses of Kate Barry, Bert Stern and set photographer Georges Pierre.

Alongside David Bowie on the set of Les Prédateurs, sharing an intimate moment with Gainsbourg, or as a Nouvelle Vague star in Jean Aurel's Manon 70, the Galerie offers a glimpse into several periods of her life. A life colored by the seventh art. In fact, it was for the filming of Les Parisiennes (1961) that she dyed her hair platinum blonde, the star's mythical signature.
