Action Against Hunger is an NGO that has been fighting hunger all over the world for over forty years. It leads a coordinated response in almost fifty countries. Its priority is to take concrete action on the ground and to bear witness to populations’ experiences, while combating the causes and consequences of malnutrition in France and internationally.
Action Against Hunger Launches this year the second edition of its Grant for a New Humanitarian Perspective. The objective is “to launch a reflection on the future of humanitarian imagery, with its actors, in order to think together about its future evolution and initiate a new look. A look that would go beyond the usual reproductions, that would be fairer, more balanced, more ethical and that would allow a more balanced exchange with the people represented.”
This grant, worth 10 000 euros, is intended to be a place for the exploration of new narrative and iconographic processes. It invites participants to come up with innovative writing and original and unexpected ways of presenting their work and to contribute to the development of iconographic language in the humanitarian field.
Entries are open until August 31, 2024, on the Action Against Hunger website, and participation in the competition is free. The Action Against Hunger Grant for a New Humanitarian Perspective will not be awarded to an already completed project: submissions must be projects that are yet to be developed or currently being developed on a humanitarian theme linked to our fields of expertise, in a country where Action Against Hunger – France operates.
As well as highlighting the work of content creators, this grant seeks to boost the visibility of the people who the NGO supports – and of their experiences – in the places where Action Against Hunger operates.
A pre-selection of 20 projects will be made by Action Against Hunger and submitted to an international, multi-disciplinary and equal-opportunity jury. This year, the jury will be chaired by Azu Nwagbogu, founder and director of the LagosPhoto Festival, and composed of Giulietta Palumbo, Editorial Director at Magnum Photos, Rachel Alessandri, Deputy Regional Director of operations for Asia at Action Against Hunger and Thomas Ellis, filmmaker and journalist.
Together, they will select the winner in October 2024. The winner will receive a €10,000 grant and the mentoring of the jury chairman to carry out his or her project, which will be exhibited from October 2025.
Terms and Conditions
The call for entries is open to all photographers, videographers and content creators (illustration, design, animation, etc.), regardless of nationality or age, who have reached the age of majority. Participation is free of charge.
Action Against Hunger’s Grant for a New Humanitarian Approach will be awarded to a single project (individual or collective). Entries will be judged on several criteria:
- Innovation in writing and rendering, on the whole of the proposal
- Multimedia approach, in both capture and reproduction
- Contribution to reflection on the role of the image and the renewal of the gaze
- Relevance of the subject to Action Against Hunger’s actions
- Sharing of Action Against Hunger’s values with regard to content: inclusive, respectful of dignity, bearing witness to the realities observed, quality and credibility of the candidate’s previous work.
How to Submit Your Application
Applications, detailing as precisely as possible the project, its intentions and its future development, must be submitted online via the dedicated application form, before midnight on August 31, 2024.
The form must be duly completed, in French, English or Spanish, and must contain :
- A synopsis of the overall project
- A note of intent detailing the subject, its originality and its link with the work carried out by Action Against Hunger.
- A precise description of the narrative processes and technical means envisaged to bring the project to fruition. It may be accompanied by numbered photographs if the project is already underway, sketches or any other medium that the candidate deems useful to add to his/her file.
- An estimate of the production costs involved in carrying out the project (travel, accommodation, visas, etc.).
- A biography of the candidate
- A link to the applicant’s previous work
Applications will only be considered if they include all the above elements. In submitting his/her application, the candidate must also guarantee that the proposed project is original, unpublished and the fruit of his/her own reflection.
First Edition
In 2023, the first edition of the Grant awarded La faim invisible (The Invisible Hunger), a project by Camille Toulmé, an independent journalist and documentary filmmaker, and Alice Bibette, an animation director.
