I Use The Street To Make A Story
Dutch photographer Sarah Van Rij’s streets become a film set.
Sarah van Rij’s photos feel like puzzles, or riddles. Layers of carefully framed elements align for the viewer to look at something else than reality. She deliberately leaves out any time indicator, so we’re looking at Sarah’s own time. Transparent, colored, wet, shining or distorting, surfaces contribute to shaping the feeling of the scene as much as the people involved.
The characters she picks in the street, whose faces are rarely shown, are halfway between protagonists and extras of enigmatic stories taking place in fragments, in different cities around the world. Driving inspiration from films rather than photographs, her work seems to freeze the cinematic flow to a present whose past and future are up for us to figure out.
