To Me, He Will Always Be a Man

“Gal” and “Hiroshima” are the pseudonyms of two artists whose work exposes the hard path towards the affirmation of a gender nonconforming identity.

On the exhibition wall lays a letter written by Marinelli’s mother and addressed to the Virgin “Notre Dame Aparecida”, asking, among other practical things, to make her child Cipreste forget about her sexuality and become the man he is supposed to be. This act of prayer and the dreamy yet sharp imagery of the duo are a reminder of how hard it is to affirm LGBTQ identities, still, in the Brazil of 2022.
